Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroutziatis says work on the sanitation system will temporarily stop on site until a decision is made in collaboration with the department of antiquities on whether excavations should continue to find any possible new archaeological discoveries.

The discovery of the Phoenician tombs is another indication that Larnaca is a city steeped in history. It has been a continuously inhabited area for four thousand years and the discovery of ancient tombs and sarcophagi prove this to be true.", He says.

The city of Larnaca and especially the Phoenician area was a vast cemetery in ancient times, with scattered graves known as ‘Larnaces', Which is where the city of Zeno got its name from, he adds.
